Call for evidence: a clinical pathway for adults who have previously undergone a gender transition and who wish to detransition

Closes 28 Dec 2025

Opened 30 Oct 2025

Overview

NHS England is developing a clinical pathway for adults who wish to detransition. As part of this work, we are seeking input from healthcare professionals and relevant professional organisations to help identify the key elements of a national service specification for this pathway.

All specialised services commissioned by NHS England are defined by national service specifications, which set out the core standards of care that providers must meet. To ensure the detransition pathway reflects best practice and meets the needs of service users, we are calling for evidence from those with experience supporting individuals who wish to detransition.

We welcome responses to the survey questions and encourage you to upload any documents or materials that you believe NHS England should consider in developing the pathway. Your involvement in this call for evidence is entirely voluntary, and you may opt out of the survey at any time. Only submitted responses will be included in the analysis, and all information collected will be treated with the strictest confidence.

This call for evidence builds on insights gathered during an engagement exercise held in April 2025, where individuals with lived experience of detransition shared their views. Many described facing significant challenges, including unmet physical and mental health needs and difficulty accessing appropriate support.

The call for evidence will run for eight weeks, from Thursday 30 October to Sunday 28 December 2025.

Healthcare professionals with relevant experience are encouraged to contribute. Individuals with lived experience who wish to be involved in this work as it develops can register their interest by emailing: england.scengagement@nhs.net
