Creating a personal, fair and diverse health and care service

Overview

Your chance to shape the national strategy for equality, health inequalities and human rights.

Working as part of the NHS Equality and Diversity Council (EDC), the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB) is inviting a wide range of views to inform the development of the national strategy to promote equality and reduce health inequalities.  The strategy will set out a clear approach, reflective of the values of the NHS Constitution, for promoting equality and tackling health inequalities for all groups across the life course.

This work is led by Professor Steve Field, Deputy Medical Director with responsibility for Health Inequalities, and Paula Vasco-Knight, National Equality Lead. Delivery will be supported through the NHS EDC, which is hosted by the NHS CB and chaired Sir David Nicholson.

About this engagement

To deliver a truly great health and care service for everyone we must focus on the promotion of equality and the reduction of health inequalities.

A transformational national strategy will ensure that reducing health inequalities and promoting equality lies at the heart of the NHS - its values, processes and behaviours. The strategy will support the NHS to embed the values and principles of the NHS Constitution at every level within its structures and processes. It will reflect the needs of a diverse workforce and population and seek the commitment of organisations across health and care.

The survey invites feedback on a number of proposed priorities linked to the following work streams:

  1. Diverse leaders and staff
  2. Listening and learning
  3. Gaining, using and sharing knowledge
  4. Making the system work
  5. Improving lives

The priorities are set out in the ‘creating a personal, fair and diverse health and care service’ survey guide. We recommend that you print this guide and refer to it as you answer the survey questions.

The survey should take you around five to ten minutes to complete.

Next steps

Your input will be used to help shape the development of the national strategy to promote equality, health inequalities and human rights. Our intention is to publish the strategy later this year. The NHS CB is committed to working inclusively and we are seeking the input of a wide range of perspectives and voices. In addition to this online survey, there will be a number of other opportunities and accessible ways to share your views. Engagement opportunities will be promoted through the NHS CB website.
