Workforce deployment software survey - 2025

Closes 17 Sep 2025

Opened 4 Aug 2025

Overview

This annual survey assesses the extent to which e-rostering and e-job planning is implemented nationally, and collects data from all NHS trusts on their Levels of Attainment (LOA) for e-rostering and e-job planning across all different professional (clinical workforce) staff groups.

For the past 2 years we have achieved a response from 95% of trusts nationally but to truly assess the extent to which this critical national and regional workforce priority has been achieved, and to inform ongoing support offers, we are looking to obtain an answer from all provider systems.

Each year, survey data is uploaded to the Levels of Attainment Tableau dashboard, which shows progression since 2019 and links to other nationally available KPIs (for example, agency spend).

Data from the survey will also inform the next update of the Workforce Productivity Diagnostic Tool.

Why your views matter

The purpose of the national survey is to provide a baseline assessment of:

  • software coverage and
  • depth of software usage,

to help prioritise operational support and to track progress against national workforce planning and deployment priorities. Advancing e-rostering and e-job planning usage brings a wealth of benefits for staff. It provides predictability and flexibility, improving health and wellbeing, staff development and job satisfaction, leading to reduced sickness absence, improved retention and ultimately improving patient experience and outcomes. This supports organisations in reducing temporary staffing reduction expenditure and overall productivity and efficiency targets.

Completion of the survey enables trusts to assess their progress and the key actions to undertake locally to leverage the full potential of the software, whilst informing regional and national support offers, whilst tracking of progress against the 10 Year Health Plan for England: fit for the future, People Plan and system planning priorities.

Thank you for your support in ensuring a response from your organisation to the annual national Workforce Development Systems Survey.
