Professional strategy for nursing and midwifery - defining the next era of nursing and midwifery

Closes 29 Sep 2025

Opened 1 Sep 2025

Overview

The professional strategy for nursing and midwifery will set out a compelling vision for the long-term future of our professions up to 2040 focussing on our professions’ vital role in delivering the ambitions for a modern health and care system in England.

To do this we need to consider how our professions will transform to meet the needs of our changing population across all settings and embrace opportunities in the context of the wider strategic direction of travel, including commitments in the 10 Year Health Plan.

To frame this part of the conversation, we have identified a number of areas focussed on our professions’ role in:

  • working in and with our neighbourhoods and communities
  • prevention and health promotion
  • addressing global health challenges
  • research and innovation
  • digital and technology

We also need to consider how we better support all nurses, midwives and nursing associates to maximise opportunities throughout their career

We are also interested to hear your views on how we support our professions more broadly through:

  • developing a professional narrative that reflects the modern role of nursing and midwifery and makes our professions a modern career of choice
  • how we can develop and improve our approach to professional education to reflect the modern needs of practice.
  • how we develop career pathways, underpinned by effective education and training to support nurses, midwives and nursing associates to continue to develop during their careers.
  • how we can improve our professional cultures and better support the wellbeing of our professions.

This initial conversation is designed to gain insight on the different areas of the framework. Space is also provided for you to add further thoughts.
