Consultation on Specialised Services clinical commissioning policies and service specifications

Closed 17 Aug 2017

Opened 19 May 2017

Overview

NHS England has today (19 May 2017) launched a 90 day public consultation on a clinical commissioning policy proposition for Mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke and a service specification for Neurointerventional services for acute ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.

The service specification describes how these services will be delivered and will lead to improved access for patients across the country. The service will dramatically reduce the significant burden of disability arising from some types of stroke, by providing more effective blood clot removal and improved access to specialists where other neurological interventions for stroke are needed, reducing the level and severity of damage caused to the brain.

There has already been extensive engagement on this national policy and service specification, they have been developed with the support and input of lead clinicians and patient and public representatives. This approach has helped ensure that the views of key stakeholders have informed and influenced the development of this policy and service specification to date. We now wish to test them further with wider groups of stakeholders.
